Journal History

my art idols

Tue Sep 4, 2007, 2:47 PM
after reading an entry in kuroi-tsuki's journal entry, i felt incited to discuss my attitude about my own art idols as well. i admire many artists. however, my approach towards my own art (development, style, ideas etc) has been influenced by a few.

[lunayoshi] :iconlunayoshi: - in middle school, i was first exposed to digital art through stephanie's works. i didn't use the internet back then for artistic purposes until i searched 'yoshi' in a search engine and came across her site. i was amazed at how, at her age back then, such a young individual could create digital art. (back then, i have never heard of photoshop or digital coloring etc). i admired her pokemon and yoshi art. her style of coloring is really interesting - i love the soft transition of shades she is able to create. from her, i learned that the creation of characters is a way for an artist to express their own personal feelings and incorporate ideas in their work. she was the first online artist i was exposed to. though now, my taste and preference of style has evolved and diverted from that type of chibi cartoonish style that she has.

[angie starfyre] - following one of the links from stephanie's site, i came across amy's art. at first, i really wasn't into her art. i wasn't in anthros at that time. but somehow i kept looking back at starfyre's site over and over. her style captivated me somehow - the crisp lines and cel shading, the graphic design backgrounds. her web design layout appealed to me too. what i really loved was the way she designed her characters' clothing. i felt incited to draw and desgin clothes, but i sucked at drawing humans and found them boring.... and i like to draw animals. that was when i first began to take the anthro approach. sadly, she seems to have disappeared from the internet scene. i do not know if she still resides somewhere displaying her works on the internet...but if anyone knows..please tell me T_T. i miss her.

[magnus] :iconweremagnus: - stumbled upon her on neopets (ohhorror). i used to be obsessed with neopets back then. i saw her neopian comics and art on that site and i fell in love with amanda's work. she has this spunky style that emits an air of a badass and edgy aura. i love the way she presents her art, it's very vivacious. from her, i learned to explore art more wtih implementing emotions and character expressions. she even inspired me to attempt to make random comics of things. her subjects are anthro, demons and fantasy/mythical creatures.

[zarathus] :iconzarathus: - neopets lead me to amanda. amanda led me to deviantart. deviantart led me to sara mcclure. i was completely blown away by this artist who is my age. i was influenced at artists who are similar to my age because it tells me what kind of potential i could have had, and it drives me to be up to their level of skill. (of course i know now that age means nothing - it's experience) sarah's work is powerful in the manner of her subjects expressing emotions and displaying detail. i admired her style - it was more realistic compared to the other artists whom i had been watching at that time. it was new to me. after that, i wanted my subjects to have a more realistic nature and detail to them. from here on out, dA has lead me to many artists.

[nanya] :iconnanya:- i really admired the amount of detail in amelia's creature artwork. her inked artwork really inspired me. i began to experiment drawing with pen from her influence. her direction of art now has strayed from the extremely detailed dragons to more of a focus on humans/demons. i still love her style, and her cg style is incredible.

[ashryn] :iconashryn: - amazing. just amazing. everything about her style just amazes me. the flow of her art - the lines, coloring, lighting, the atmosphere is eye candy. fresh pure brilliance i perceive it. her black and white art, ink style etc and comics have an influence on me. i love the way she depicts her art - violent, sexual, and serene. she displays things in a tasteful mature manner. ashryn is my drug. her subjects are anthro.

[jennadelle and demonskittle] :iconjennadelle: :icondemonskittle:- i'm putting them together because it is easier that way i guess. they both are different in style but they impact me the same way. i originally wasn't into doing line art. i was wanting to go towards a realistic approach without lines etc. but somehow, their style just captivates me. their line art style, their methods of coloring, creating the atmosphere and portraying their work is dramatic and awe inspiring. i admire their usage of various motifs like: lanterns, moths, fishes etc. the way they manipulate light, lines, and color has this attractive nature that draws many viewers to appreciate their work. their art includes nice concepts and compositons. from them, i wanted to learn how to experiment more with lines, coloring, and lighting. hmm jenna seems to have secluded herself to displaying her recent art to 'friends only' now. i think it is better that way really. (i have this paranoia that i am leeching off her).

----
now that i've stated who my idols are, it is probably no surprise that if you go back and look at my gallery you can put two and two together and determine which piece was influenced by which artist. i don't have my own distinct style yet, and there is a lot of inconsistency going on. i seem to be wavering here and there. currently, what i have been doing is not focusing on getting a consistent style, but just creating a style i feel that is appropriate -just- for that particular work. i know that the first thing i need to establish as a style is actually the -way- i draw the subjects. after that, i can then start to experiment with coloring, lighting, details, lines etc. i really don't like to be confined in one area however, sometimes i feel like making things more detailed with a semi-realistic and natural feel. also, sometimes i just want to do colored line art etc.

i am probably influenced by other artists as well, but the ones i have listed above are the ones whom i consider to have impacted me the most.

oh yeah, and i gotta admit. anime (in general) is an influence as well. i like to draw fanart of some characters, but i'm not very good at drawing humans. so in a way, anime is motiviating me to refine my human drawing skills. and i'd rather have a more western based style/or less exaggerated anime style for my human drawings.
